Abstract
A research center focusing on salinity gradient energy (SGE), “Blue Energy center for SGE Technology (BEST)”, was newly established in Yamaguchi University in July 2018. This center is forging ahead membrane–based researches utilizing SGE towards its future’s implementation. In BEST, there are three research groups: (1) SGE conversion group, (2) Water hydrolysis group and (3) Water treatment group. Here, we introduced one of BEST ’s researches, a direct hydrogen production technique from seawater and sewage treated water by reverse electrodialysis (RED–H2 system). Since Yamaguchi is one of innovative prefectures for hydrogen applications, there is a good opportunity to generate CO2–free hydrogen (and oxygen) by the RED–H2 system at the municipal wastewater plant especially in Shunan city.
