A cutting edge desalination system using reverse osmosis membranes has been developed. This system is capable of stable operation at a water recovery rate of 50 ~ 60%, whereas conventional systems are operated at a water recovery rate of 35 ~ 45% to ensure stable operation. In order to demonstrate the stability of the developed system, a pilot scale plant was operated in Al–Jubail, Saudi Arabia, facing the Arabian gulf, which is a relatively high membrane fouling risk area. As a result, it was found that the developed system could be operated for up to 7 months without CIP even in such area. By improving the water recovery rate of the RO process, it is expected to reduce the equipment cost, operating cost and environmental impact of the desalination plant.
