Abstract

Simulium (Hellichiella) chiharuae sp. nov. is described on the basis of adults, pupae and mature larvae collected in Himuro, Kyoto, Japan. This is the first species of the subgenus Hellichiella recorded from Japan. This new species is distinguished from other members of this subgenus by the pupal gill with three slender filaments per side.
