There are 49 usage of the verb form of "arikeri." in the whole The TALE OF GENJI, including the "arikeri" in the beginning sentence of Kiritsubo-no-Maki, Out of 49 usage of verb form "arikeri", 16 cases of subject are human characters and 32 cases of subject are non human characters.. Moreovr, 40 percent (or 16 out) of 40 main tales except Kiritsubo-no-Maki,the word "koto" is used in the beginning sentence. This shows that the narrator of the main tales of The TALE OF GENJI takes the basic style of telling concrete events and/or facts. Therefore I conclude that "koto" is the subject of "arikeri." in the beginning sentence of Kiritsubo-no-Maki.
