N. Ogawa, ex-Prof. at Taihoku Imperial Univ., having spent 40 years since 1897 in Formosa, contributed greatly to the study of Chinese Fukien dialects and, later, of Indonesian languages until his death on Nov. 20, 1947. His main works on Indonesian linguistics may be summarized as follows; I. On Indonesian Phonology. Criticizing the conclusions of Brandstetter and Dempwolff and surveying innumerable first-hand materials from Formosan Indonesians, gave q (uvula explosive), t_2, d_2, n_2, and s_2 Sounds to Original Indonesian, correspodences of which are shown in the following table.
