Abstract
This paper introduces the aim of the project "Computational Anatomy for Computer-Aided Diagnosis and Therapy: Frontiers of Medical Image Sciences" which is supported by the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas. It aims to establish a new discipline "Computational Anatomy". The challenges in this project include (1) development of theories for the representation of anatomical models that allow for inter-individual variability in shape and topology, which should be constructed through statistical analyses of population data; (2) investigation of methodologies for precise and robust retrieval of anatomical information from medical images which are virtually equivalent to the dissection of a real human body; and (3) development of innovative technologies assisting medical diagnosis and interventions, based on computational anatomy. The project is expected to contribute to advanced medicine, basic biomedical research, medical education, and information science. The research organization is also shown in this article.
