Abstract
Retinal fundus examination, while relatively simple examination compared to other medical imaging exams, can depict not only eye diseases but also whole body conditions noninvasively. Retinal fundus images are suitable for screening and follow-up examinations; some diseases that can be detected using retinal fundus images are asymptomatic until advanced stages. However, the number of experienced ophthalmologists is limited. Therefore, computerized analysis of retinal fundus images is expected for increasing accuracy and efficiency of diagnostic physicians. Image analysis of retinal fundus images is a very active area of research, partially owing to the presence of several public databases. In this paper, basic background and methods of retinal image analysis are introduced.
