The CaO-MgO catalysts were prepared by calcining Ca (OH) 2-Mg (OH) 2 mixture with various compositions at 500°C in vacuo. Then, the catalytic activity and solid basicity of CaO-MgO catalysts have been examined. The CaO-MgO of molar ratio 1 showed a maximum activity being greater than that of CaO obtained by calcining Ca (OH) 2 at 500°C in vacuo. A very good correlation was found between the catalytic activity and solid basicity measured by an indicator method. Basicity of CaO-MgO catalysts found to be changed remarkably by the crystallite size of the contained CaO.
