Influence of activators (Ca (OH) 2, Al2 (SO4) 3, Na2SO4, AlCL3) on hydration of supersulfated slag cement, reaction product and strength of hardened body was investigated. The results were summarized as follows :
(1) Hydration proceeded above pH 11, activators which gave higher initial pH promoted initial hydration preferably.
(2) Developement of the compressive strength and the structure of hardened body related closely to initial pH. At initial pH above 12.3 needle-like ettringite was produced rapidly and the initial strength was large but after that did not increase so much. In the range of initial pH 11. 7-12. 3, dense structure was observed. Consequently, the initial strength and the subsequent developement were satisfactory. At initial pH below 11. 7, the strength developed slowly and dense structure was achieved at the age of 14 days.
(3) Between hydration rate X and compressive strength Y, a relation of Y=0.1 X3 was obtained. Initial compressive strength was nearly proportional to production rate of ettringite and generated CSH contributed to subsequent increase of strength. A relation between relative CSH production rate X and compressive strength Y was Y=3.6X2.
