Experimental study was carried out at 1400°C on the desulfurization of hot metal by use of porous lime impregnated with carbon in order to get low oxygen potentials at the reaction interface.
The results show that the sulfur content in the metal decreased to a very low level, and that the loss of manganese and carbon in hot metal was prevented.
It was concluded that this method can be applied to desulfurization of hot metal without changing the content of alloying elements.
