During the l930s, the New Buddhist Youth Union engaged in
antiwar actions and in a peace movement within the non-sectarian
Buddhist community. Some of their theoretical tenets included the use
of the study of Early Buddhism. But it seems effective to use the
Diamond Wisdom Sutra as the basis of such theories, because by doing
so the movement would root itself in the Japanese tradition. This would
be done for three reasons: first, because it is a Mahayana scripture
related to ancient Japanese; second, because few specific Buddhas do
appear; and third, because it is a book of practice. As a social practice
based upon the Diamond Wisdom Sutra, there are five actions to
consider. First, we should ensure that our final goal is placing all
creatures in a condition of complete nirvana; second, we should give
generously without retaining attachment to anything; third we should be
patient without retaining an attachment to anyone; fourth, we should be
willing to accept slander or abuse; fifth, we should purify our own
Buddha field without attachment.
