Abstract
Following a ten-year endeavor to transform it,a flora check and tree census were implemented in an experimental forest located in the eastern part of the Tama Hill and a property of the Hiraoka Environmental Science Laboratory. 278 total species had been recognized in previous surveys. 196 species were found during this survey. Succession progressed and the forest floor became dark. As a result, annual plants decreased. The trunk sizes and heights of 1381 trees were measured. An increase in evergreen broad-leaved trees was observed, especially for Quercus glauca (185 trees) and Eurya japonica (146 trees), while Quercus serrata, a deciduous broad-leaved tree, decreased. This amounted to the transition in succession from deciduous broad-leaved forest to evergreen broad-leaved forest. The forest is due to be preserved in its natural condition with simple care.
