During 1986-88, studies on the habitat utilization of Japanese dormouse,
Glirulus japonicus, using nestboxes were performed in the sub-alpine belt, central Japan. Japanese dormice, small Japanese field mice,
Apodemus argenteus, coal tit,
Parus ater, great tit,
Parus major and wasp
Vespoidae sp. were found to utilize of nestboxes.
Japanese dormice utilized the nestboxes from April through October. High utilization rates were present in September and October. No utilization was, however, observed during the winter times, from November through March.
Japanese dormice utilized nestboxes more often in coniferous forests, followed by deciduous forests. Ranch bushes were the least utilized habitat.
