Aconitum tanguticum (MAXIM.) STAPF is a scapose species growing in the alpine zone of central China. Lectotypification of A. tanguticum is made and flowers, especially nectary blades, of this species are illustrated in this paper. Nectary spurs were short but well developed and copious secretion of nectar was confirmed in the field. Nectar-robbing by bumblebees was also observed in the field. The subterranean organ of A. tanguticum was a perennial, branched tuber. Central Asian A. zeravschanicum STEINB. and Siberian A. popovii STEINB. & SCHISCH. ex SIPLIV. also carry perennial, branched tubers. Having perennial tubers is unique in subgenus Aconitum because most species possess annual tubers. Possibility of the establishment of a new section including these three species is pointed out. An undescribed taxon belonging to this group is preliminarily mentioned here. Phylogenetic significance of the new section between the subgenera Lycoctonum and Aconitum is also suggested.

The spatial distribution of plants with different growth stages of Paris tetraphylla A. GRAY was investigated in an area of 4 × 4 m in the Kikuchi (Kk) population of Kumamoto Prefecture by the m-m method. One-, two-, and three-leaved plants tended to form clumps and to be overdispersed (contagious distribution), while the four-leaved plants varied from overdispersed to underdispersed. Flowering four-leaved plants exhibited light underdispersal (regular distribution). As for the patterns of spatial distribution of plants with various C-banded karyotypes, flowering four-leaved plants were distributed randomly in the area and even those growing side by side had different karyotypes. Three plants with the same homozygous karyotype grew in a very limited space. This spatial distribution could be a reflection of predominant random breeding with a low degree of inbreeding in this species.

Vegetations in and around the minorities' villages in the western Yunnan, China are sketched based on the field work which was conducted in Dehong Prefecture of Yunnan in December, 1997. The minorities villages we visited were as follows; De-ang Tribe's Ien Qian Village, De-ang Tribe's Xiangcaitang Village, Dai Tribe's Dadenhan Village, A-chang Tribe's Bansu Village, Jingpo Tribe's Gongxia Village, and De-ang Tribe's Jinzu Village. These villages are located on gentle slopes at the foot of small hills except Dadenhan village which is situated on flat land being surrounded by paddyfields. Various vegetations were observed in and around these villages.

Crabs collected with a cage trap or hand net in submarine caves around Koror Island in the Palau Islands were identified as the following six species: Schizophrys dahlak GRIFFIN & TRANTER of the Majidae, Carupa ohashii TAKEDA, Charybdis paucidentata (A. MILNE EDWARDS) and Laleonectes nipponensis (SAKAI) of the Portunidae, and Lentilumnus latimanus (GORDON) and Pilumnus sp. of the Pilumnidae. Of these species, S. dahlak had been reported only from the Red Sea, and Ch. paucidentata from the western Indian Ocean including the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Species of the Majidae and Portunidae seemed to be typical inhabitants of the submarine caves.

The larval form of Stelidota multiguttata REITTER, 1877 belonging to the Nitidulinae is described and illustrated in detail, together with the common larval structure of the Nitidulinae. The larvae and adults of the genus Stelidota usually inhabit leaf-litter, and they feed on ripe or rotten fruits. The material used in this paper was collected from leaf-litter in Kawasaki City and Zushi City. The larva of multiguttata is characterized by the structure of antenna, mouth-parts, pregomphi and urogomphi, and by the pattern of setae of abdominal segments.

During 1986-88, studies on the habitat utilization of Japanese dormouse, Glirulus japonicus, using nestboxes were performed in the sub-alpine belt, central Japan. Japanese dormice, small Japanese field mice, Apodemus argenteus, coal tit, Parus ater, great tit, Parus major and wasp Vespoidae sp. were found to utilize of nestboxes.
Japanese dormice utilized the nestboxes from April through October. High utilization rates were present in September and October. No utilization was, however, observed during the winter times, from November through March.
Japanese dormice utilized nestboxes more often in coniferous forests, followed by deciduous forests. Ranch bushes were the least utilized habitat.

Fossil cones were found in the late Pleistocene sediment from Tamagawa Vilage, Saitama prefecture, central Japan. Needle-shape cone scales were identified along the axis part of the cone bottom. Most likely, these markings indicate areas (scars) where squirrels had been eating.

Following a ten-year endeavor to transform it，a flora check and tree census were implemented in an experimental forest located in the eastern part of the Tama Hill and a property of the Hiraoka Environmental Science Laboratory. 278 total species had been recognized in previous surveys. 196 species were found during this survey. Succession progressed and the forest floor became dark. As a result, annual plants decreased. The trunk sizes and heights of 1381 trees were measured. An increase in evergreen broad-leaved trees was observed, especially for Quercus glauca (185 trees) and Eurya japonica (146 trees), while Quercus serrata, a deciduous broad-leaved tree, decreased. This amounted to the transition in succession from deciduous broad-leaved forest to evergreen broad-leaved forest. The forest is due to be preserved in its natural condition with simple care.

Macrofungal assemblage developing in the experimental forest of the Hiraoka Environmental Science Laboratory (Kawasaki-City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan) was surveyed from April 1997 to March 1998, in order to evaluate ecological conditions at that time and to simulate further succession of the forest.
Carpophores collected in the forest were identified in 24 families and 45 species. The present conditions of the forest are briefly discussed mainly based upon the incidence of carpophores of ectomycorrhizal basidiomycetes.
