Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has been considered a reliable technique in the diagnosis of malignancies in pancreaticobiliary ductal system, but the findings are often inconclusive and pathologic confirmation is required. Adequate tissue sampling for histological diagnosis seems utmost imporant. Transpapillary biopsy of pancreatic and biliary ducts is simple and readily available during ERCP, and the results are promissing.
Because endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) can evaluate the presence of tumors as well as tumor extent, combined use of ERCP, EUS and biopsy in one session may be recommended in the diagnosis of biliopancreatic malignancies.
