Abstract
Cases of esophgeal cancer are often advanced cases, and its prognosis is poor. The usefulness of surgical resection alone is limited, and multidisciplinary treatment is necessary. We performed chemo-radiotherapy in 30 patients with advanced thoracic esophageal cancer. Radiotherapy was performed at 2Gy/day (total,40Gy). As chemotherapy, CDDP was administered at adose of 40-50 mg/day weekly 3-4times and 5FU at a dose of 250-500mg/day daily for 30 days. The effects of this adjunctive therapy were evaluated, and a metal stent was inserted in patients who did not undergo resection. The rate of response to this adjunctive therapy was 76.7%, indicating marked effectiveness. Stent insertion allowed oral ingestion and improved the QOL in the pateents.
