Lev Ilyich Mechnikov worked in the Russian studies in Tokyo University of Foreign studies in Japan for two years from 1838 to 1888. It was surprising for him that common people in Japan read many printed materials. This paper reviews through his eyes where they learned letters, what texts they used, how they bought the expensive books and why they had strong interests reading these books.
