This paper proposes a method for color monitoring using color patches printed not in a newspaper's margins or some such empty space but rather on an inside page. These patches differ in size from the small patches traditionally found in newspapers, and they are sufficiently large to enable color measurement using a commercial colorimeter. These patches enabled the determination of the color characteristics of printed color advertising and assisted in the quality control of an actual daily newspaper. The approach of using color patches for color monitoring is unprecedented in the field of color quality control in the Japanese newspaper industry. The newsprint color patches for color monitoring were found to be a useful means for quality control of color newspaper printing according to objective evaluation and subjective evaluation.
