Nowadays, radiation curing is a well-estabished technology that has developed and grown rapidly on an industrial scale. More recent application is laser-induced curing. The practical development of these technologies obviously requies new photosensitive materials. This article is mainly concerned with an overview of the present status for the photoinitiation step of light-induced polymerization reactions. Recent and relevant results concerned with the quantum yields for radical formation and reactivity of radical and cationic photoinitiators will be discussed in this paper. Only basic research data relating the important topics of photochemical reactivity will be mentioned throughout.
