Abstract

This paper discusses the marking of utterance structure on annotation insertion, examining the use of non-linguistic communication resources. This paper considers the following as communication resources: phonetic structure (e.g, pause), nonverbal behaviors (e.g, gestures and postures) and artifacts (e.g, slides), and examines how these resources are integrated with each other and contribute to the marking of utterance structure. The analysis shows that marking of utterance structure can be achieved through the use of the communication resources. Based on this result, the author proposes that the study of grammar for Japanese pedagogy should focus not only on linguistic forms, but also on other communication resources (phonetic features, nonverbal behaviors, artifacts). In other words, it is important to recognize that the use of linguistic forms is only one of the resources for communication, and linguistic forms and other communication resources are equivalent in communication. Therefore, communication as a whole is considered to be a target for analysis.
