Abstract

Various employment support projects have been instituted for high-skilled foreign personnel seeking job opportunities at Japanese companies due to the globalization of the Japanese economy. The utilization of high-skilled foreign personnel has not been progressing sufficiently in Japan, and one of the causes is the difficulty of evaluating their business Japanese proficiency accurately in the course of the recruiting process. Currently, a solution is being sought to build up adequate training for high-skilled foreign personnel to develop their business communication proficiency. Accordingly, this study also describes the process of developing Business Japanese can-do statements as a way to evaluate business Japanese proficiency. Furthermore, one of the purposes for developing the Business Japanese can-do statements is to define the attainment targets for training in business Japanese. The items of the can-do statements were composed by analyzing the measuring objectives of the Business Japanese Proficiency Test. After the preliminary surveys were completed, the can-do statements were revised, and the validity of the majority of the items was then improved upon. However, it is still necessary to verify the can-do statements to improve the overall validity of several of the items.
