Gas Chromatographic Retention Behavior of Halomethanes

Abstract

Gas chromatographic retention behavior of bromochlorofluoromethanes (25 compounds) was measured on a Silicone DC 550 column or a Porapak Q column. The logarithm of the specific retention volume (Vg) on each column correlates linearly with the composition of halogen atoms in the molecule, whereas it does not correlate linearly with the number of hydrogen atoms. The log Vg correlates linearly with the boiling point and the molecular refraction for each series of halomethanes containing the same number of hydrogen atoms.
