Abstract
Objective: A 9-month seminar consisting of repeated guidance concerning diet and exercise was conducted for persons having risk factors for metabolic syndrome (Mets), in particular overeating and lack of exercise. The results of this educational event and its effectiveness were evaluated at our wellness check-up center in Suzuka-city, Mie Prefecture. Methods: Nineteen subjects comprising 14 men and 5 women with a mean age of 62.6 years, having a body mass index (BMI) of more than 25 and 2 or more Mets factors participated in the seminar which was conducted in 2005. At the beginning there was a lecture on the medical aspects of Mets and an explanation of the program for preventing and controlling it. Thirteen times over the 9 months, subjects' meal records were checked and they did exercises. Physical activity of steps, momentum and total consumption were determined by a life-recorder machine. In addition, blood pressures was measured and blood tests performed. Finally, guidance was given to increase motivation and subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire. Results: Serum triglyceride and fasting blood glucose were significantly decreased after the seminar (p<0.001, p<0.01, respectively). However, there was no change in BMI, body fat ratio, blood pressure or HDL-cholesterol. Lifestyles had improved. Conclusions: Our seminar motivated the subjects to improve their lifestyles in order to prevent Mets, especially with regard to diet and exercise.
