Objective: A 9-month seminar consisting of repeated guidance concerning diet and exercise was conducted for persons having risk factors for metabolic syndrome (Mets), in particular overeating and lack of exercise. The results of this educational event and its effectiveness were evaluated at our wellness check-up center in Suzuka-city, Mie Prefecture. Methods: Nineteen subjects comprising 14 men and 5 women with a mean age of 62.6 years, having a body mass index (BMI) of more than 25 and 2 or more Mets factors participated in the seminar which was conducted in 2005. At the beginning there was a lecture on the medical aspects of Mets and an explanation of the program for preventing and controlling it. Thirteen times over the 9 months, subjects' meal records were checked and they did exercises. Physical activity of steps, momentum and total consumption were determined by a life-recorder machine. In addition, blood pressures was measured and blood tests performed. Finally, guidance was given to increase motivation and subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire. Results: Serum triglyceride and fasting blood glucose were significantly decreased after the seminar (p<0.001, p<0.01, respectively). However, there was no change in BMI, body fat ratio, blood pressure or HDL-cholesterol. Lifestyles had improved. Conclusions: Our seminar motivated the subjects to improve their lifestyles in order to prevent Mets, especially with regard to diet and exercise.

Objective: To compare the positive finding rates for subclinical atherosclerosis in metabolic syndrome with those in hypercholesterolemia. Methods: We compared the atherosclerotic changes in electrocardiography and funduscopy among patients with total blood cholesterol levels <220mg/dl and metabolic syndrome (M group: males 337, females 29), patients with total blood cholesterol levels≥220mg/dl and metabolic syndrome (C group: males 235, females 473), and patients with total blood cholesterol levels <220mg/dl but no component of metabolic syndrome (N group: males 159, females 95). The C group was further subdivided for comparison by number of coincident components of metabolic syndrome excluding abdominal circumference. Results: Positive finding rates in the M group excluding those for electrocardiographic findings in females were significantly more frequent than in the C and N groups. There was a significant difference in positive finding rates between the C and N groups for both males and females, and rates increased in proportion to the number of coincident components of metabolic syndrome. In addition, the positive finding rates in the group having all complications of hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia were similar to those in M group. Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome probably has atherosclerosisaccelerating effects comparable to those of hypercholesterolemia complicated by many other risk factors.

Objective: Since the incidence of fatty liver detected in health check-ups using ultrasonography has been increasing, we analyzed health check-up data in order to clarify whether behavior modification was evident or not in subjects have fatty liver. Methods: This study targeted ninehundred and eightysix examinees from 1996 and 1,001 examinees from 2003. All examinees were between 40 and 60 years old. We analyzed changes in ultrasonographic findings, body mass index (BMI), serum triglyceride (TG) levels, serum total cholesterol (TCHO) levels and the serum HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. Results: All patients that had a fatty liver in 1996 were again diagnosed with fatty liver in 1999. In 1999, BMI, TG and TCHO had deteriorated as compared with 1996. On the other hand, in 2006, the fatty liver had disappeared in 43.2%patients who had had a fatty liver in 2003. Moreover, in 2006, BMI, TG, TCHO and HDL-C had improved in some patient groups as compared to 2003. Conclusion: Many examinees who were told they had a fatty liver and abnormal biochemical tests in the 2003 seemed to have made a greater effort towards improvement than those told the same things in 1996.

Objective: To compare basic data used to evaluate the results of special medical examinations and special health guidance commenced in fiscal 2008 as large scale preventive measures against metabolic syndrome. Methods: Around 280,000 persons undergoing health examinations in fiscal 2006 were divided into different age and body system groups and analyzed according to evaluation grades from A to F (A: normal, F: continuous treatment required) as well as by ∑DEF/A (%), a parameter proposed by the authors for indicating the ease of contracting disease. Results: For y=axn, all values of n were negative and the curve was closer to the y axis the larger the absolute power values became. Body system groups fell between a rapidly decreasing trend seen for “auditory” and a slowly decreasing trend seen for“lipid metabolism”. Conclusion: In the tallying, the variance that a small number of cases were prone to could be avoided to a certain extent through the use of mathematical analyses.
