Abstract
It is well known that bullous impetigo (impetigo) and staphylococcal toxic epidermal necrolysis (STEN) are caused only by the exfoliatin producing strain of Staphylococcus aureus. The authors have performed a comparative study on the exfoliatin producers isolated from skin lesions, nose and throat. The following significant results were obtained. Exfoliatin producing staphylococci were isolated from most patients of impetigo and STEN. However when analyzed, skin diseases other than impetigo and STEN were found to have a lower incidence of exfoliatin producing staphylococci. In conclusion, it was discovered that from the 177 strains isolated from all skin diseases, 90 (51%) were found to be exfoliatin producers.
