Abstract

A new series of hypo-allergenic cosmetics “CLINICA” without any fragrant materials was evaluated in 176 female patients who visited the dermatologic clinics at Branch Hospital of Nagoya University, Kansai Medical University and Osaka Kaisei Hospital. The patients were divided into three groups: 72 patients with non-pigmented cosmetic dermatitis, 64 with pigmented cosmetic dermatitis and 40 with other dermatosis than cosmetic dermatitis, such as melasma. In patch-testing with 30 “CLINICA” products, it was found that the skin irritant index of each product was lower than the average index of the commercial preparation. In addition, neither phototoxic nor photoallergic reaction was detected in “CLINICA” products. Thus, “CLINICA” has been evaluated to be hypo-irritant cosmetics. The use test with “CLINICA” was performed in 150 out of 176 patients. A single product was applied every two weeks continuously. Skin troubles occurred in 20 patients (13.3%), and in 52 out of the whole 1,727 cases with 29 test products (3.0%). The second use test was carried out in 8 out of the 20 patients 3 to 6 months later. Skin troubles occurred again in 5 out of the 8 patients (62.5%), and in 5 out of 17 products tested (29.4%). The allergenic ingredients of “CLINICA” are parabens in the whole products except for the cosmetic solution, and a few kinds of coal-tar dyes in some make-up products. It is recommended, thus, to be patch-tested with the allergens equipped in “CLINICA” series before the use test.
