Abstract
The in vitro effects of topical antifungal agents butenafine (KP-363), naftifine, tolnaftate, clotrimazole and bifonazole on Malassezia species were examined using an agar dilution method. The results were summarized as follows;
1) The MICs of antimycotic agents against Malassezia spp. Candida parapsilosis or Cryptococcus neoformans were markedly raised by olive oil or Tween 80 in the medium. The effect was more marked in the case of olive oil than in the case of Tween 80.
2) The MICs of antimycotic agents was decreased as the concentration of Tween 80 in the medium was decreased from 0.2% to 0.04%.
3) The relative order of anti-Malassezia potency determined in the medium containing 0.2% Tween 80 was bifonazole>clotrimazole=butenafine>naftifine>tolnaftate.
