Abstract
Two cases of adult measles with myocarditis were reported. Case 1 was a 23 years old male who was admitted with a high fever and skin eruptions,. Initially he was diagnosed as infectious mononucleosis since he emphasized that he had already had measles in his childhood. However, from his skin eruptions the measles were strongly suspected. Two days after admission, he developed severe dyspnea. From the findings of chest X-ray examinations, electrocardiograms and serological examinations of virus antibodies, myocarditis complicated with measles was consequently diagnosed. Ten days after admission, he came down with double vision and headache, and was suspected of having measles encephalomyelitis. Two months later, he fully recovered and was discharged. Case 2 was a 22 years old male who was admitted with high fever and hematuria. One day after admission, skin eruptions developed. Then, he developed severe dyspnea and was diagnosed as measles complicated with myocarditis. Later, it was discovered that these two cases had worked at the same place. The onset of these two cases differed by only 13 days, therefore it was strongly suggested that Case 2 was infected by Case 1. It is widely known that pneumonia and encephalitis may sometimes be complicated with measles. Myocarditis is, however, a rare complication and only a few such cases had been reported in literature. Mutations of measles viruses, which have been noted recently, are also discussed.
