Abstract
A 80-year-old Japanese woman who was suffering from erythema with infiltration on the both lower extremities for three months. In this case, histological examination of skin biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of erythema nodosum. Treatment with anti-bacterial infusion and oral NSAIDs were started but they were not effective. To investigate the background of skin lesion, whole body was examined. As results, rectal MALT lymphoma and Helicobacter pylori (H. pyrori)infection on stomach were found. Unfortunately, little is known about relationship between erythema nodosum, and rectal MALT lymphoma, H. pylori infection. However, there are a few reports that rectal MALT lymphoma could be improved slightly after removal of H. pylori. After treatment of H. pylori, the size of rectal MALT lymphoma was reduced and erythema nodosum on the both lower extremities were improved gradually. It is not clarified whether rectal MALT lymphoma and/or H. pylori infection can be cause of erythema nodosum or not. However, based on our clinical case, we would suggest that investigation of malignancy and H. pylori is required and removal of H. pylori might be effective in uncontrolled erythema nodosum.
