The author conducted cytological studies on liver biopsy, and classified various cells constituting the normal liver of human beings as well as rabbits and rats.
Normal liver cells are easy to differentiate from other cells on the smear preparation of materials obtained by liver biopsy. They are much more glyceogen and protein, ribonucleic acid (RNA), phosphatase, which are easily stained by cytochemical methods. However, the so-called Kuppfer's cell resembles monocyte, Iymphpcyte and other cells, and it is often difficult to distinguish them cytologically. The author distinguished them by cytological and cytochemical methods.
Next, he studies the pathological changes of a diseased liver. The remainder of the liver, which was resected partially, was speedily enlarged. The regenerative liver cells were observed microscpically on the smear preparation, stained by several cytochemical methods. These results almost agreed with other histological and biochemical studies.
The author observed the degenerative change in the liver, which had been treated with chloroform, CCL4 and yellow phosphorus. The degenerative liver cells had a deficiency of basophility in the cytoplasma, as well as an enlarged nucleus and nucleolus, an increase of fatvacuoles, a lack of glycogen, a diffused staining of protein, a decrease of RNA, phosphatase, & c,
The experimental hepatoma of a rat when treated with DAB (p-Dimethylamino azobenzine), was also studied. The hepatoma cells showed many peculiar features, such as malignant neoplastic cells. And then, in connection with Professor Yoshida's Ascites Hepatoma, the author's studies failed to show any difference between the two cells cf a “pair” and an “island, ” which constitute the Ascites Hepatoma.
