Recently Noda, one of the colleagues of authors laboratory, deviced a new method to cultivate hook worm aseptic in vitro.
The present study is concerned to determine the existence of anemia substances in the medium cultivated with hook worm and to clear up the character of such substances.
Materials and process of study: 1) the filtrates of the medium cultivated with larvae and adults of alive dog hook worm, 2) the ether soluble and nonsoluble substances of the filtrates of the medium cultivated with larvae. 3) with the absolute alcohol deproteined ether nonsoluble substance.
These materials were injected subcutaneously one time daily for 4 or 5 days in rabbits and the blood picture was examined.
Results: After injection of the filtrates of the medium and the ether soluble and nonsoluble substances, erythrocytes and hemoglobin reducd remarkably and reticulocytes, young form of pseudoeosinophil and eosinophil leucocytes incrased. The anemia producing effect of these substances seemed larger in ether nonsoluble substance than the other, but when the ether nonsoluble substance was deproteined with the absolute alcohol, the remarkable effect was not determined.
Conclusion: It was confirmed that anemia producing substances are excreted by hook worm in the culture medium and these substances are ether soluble lipoids and ether nonsoluble proteinlike substances.
