Abstract
Various anabolic steroids that are available (H. M. D. Ethylestrenol. 4CL-TA, 19-NAPP) were clinically and experimentally administered and their effects were evaluated on the basis of nitrogen balance, 17 KS, urinary out-put and changes in body weight.
Animals used in this experiments consisting of rats and mice were divided into.following three groups;(1) fasting (2) fed with protein free diet (3) fed with various amount of protein.
The third group was further subdivided according to the percentage of protein included in the diet.
The clinical evaluations were carried out mainly on the elderly patients who had relatively large operations such as gastrectomy and esophagectomy.
It was clearly identified that these steroids were most efficiently used when;(1) the patients is in the transitonal periods from catabolic to anabolic phase;(2) they are elderly;(3) they had bigger surgical stress.
Serial urinary outputs of 17-KS of elderly patients in their postoperativestates, were very similar to those of younger and healthy patients when the anabolic steroids were used properly.
Vigorous administration of those steroids were found to be very effective for the prevention of postoperative oliguria which is otherwise rather prevalent.
