Abstract

Functional activity of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) was studied by using iron-chondroitin sulfate colloid (59Fe) on the rats with normal and cirrhotic liver which was induced by CCl4 and on hepatectomized rats of both groups.
Phagocytic index (P.I.) of the cirrhotic group was significantly lower than that of normal group. This decrease was thought mainly due to lessend activity of Kupffer cell. An increased uptake rate of 59Fe in the both spleen and the lung was observed, especially in the lung in cirrhotic group.
P.I. in the normal liver group was significantly decreased after partial hepatectomies, but returned to normal value within 3 days in 30% hepatectomized rats, and 5 days in 70% hepatectomized rats. P.I. in the cirrhotic group was also significantly decreased after 30% hepatectomy but its recovery was prolonged as compared that of normal group.
Postoperative decreased uptake of 59Fe in the liver and increased uptake in the lung was observd in both groups. These changes were most prominent in the rats with massive hepatectomy in normal group and in the rats with partial hepatectomy in cirrhotic group.
