By using chlorobenzene and chloral, Friedel-Crafts reaction was studied. When the volume of chlorobenzene, which has the solvent action for the products and absorbs the heat of reaction, was increased, both the reactions of dehydration and addition were started at the same time. As the result, trichloromethyl-p-chlorophenylcarbinol and dichlorodiphenyl-trichlo-roethane were obtained in good yield and p-chlorotetraphenylethane in a small quantity.
