A New Determination Method of Hexonic Acids

Conversion to Furfural through Pentoses and Determination by Colorimetric Method

Abstract

Procedures for the determination and detection of hexonic acids in the presence of Ca and borate ions are described.
Hexonic acids are oxidized with HOCl at pH 4_??_5 to aldopentoses followed by cyclization to furfural which is subjected to colorimetric determination.
This method is very sensitive and has high specificity for hexonic acids without interference except hexuronic acids.
