Previous studies on rice production cost issues in Japan had difficulty in estimating costs for drying rice, especially electricity charges. As such, the aim of this paper is to clarify electricity charges for drying rice and identify reduction possibilities through private power generation. Research on a farm service company in Iwate Prefecture showed that electricity charges represented 45.6% of goods costs for drying rice. However, the company's private power generation reduced the price of JPY 28,500 by JPY 5,881 monthly. We estimate the annual reduction would be 20% of their electricity charges for drying rice.
