Gas chromatography (GC) is widely used for fatty acid composition analysis. This review summarizes collaborative studies on short-chain fatty acid analysis and the use of hydrogen and nitrogen as alternative carrier gases to helium. Propyl esterification reduced the loss of volatile short-chain fatty acids, while hydrogen and nitrogen provided fatty acid composition values comparable to those obtained with helium. These findings support the development of the Standard Methods for the Analysis of Fats, Oils and Related Materials.
