Abstract
Fundamental matters and recent progress of the chemistry of troponoids are reviewed. These include typical synthetic methods, properties, functionalities, and some uses (such as medicines, cosmetics, and liquid crystals) of tropones and tropolones. Syntheses and some uses of azulenes and 1-azaazulenes are also briefly described.
