Tonsillectomy is the most frequently performed surgery in otolaryngology departments in Japan. Postoperative bleeding, tooth damage, perioral burn and laceration are common complications of tonsillectomy.
Perioral burn and laceration which mainly result from the use of bipolar coagulators and ligatures cause pain and discomfort postoperatively, although they are not critical complications. We report on the use of the Angle Wider device to prevent perioral burn and laceration during tonsillectomy.
