Abstract
Forty-eight patients with parotid tumors treated in the Department of Otolaryngology, Kanazawa University Hospital during the four and a half years period between January 1988 and June 1992 were reviewed. Thirty-seven cases were benign tumors while eleven were malignant. In benign tumors, twenty-four cases were pleomorphic adenoma, eleven cases were Warthin's tumor. In malignant tumors, six cases were adenoidcystic carcinoma. Most of the parotid tumors were epithelial tumor and non-epithelial tumors were rare. We encounterd 49-year-old female with a parotid lipoma, which is rare among parotid non-epithelial tumors. She had left parotid tumor, but not facial palsy. The CT scan demonstrated a well-circumscribed low density mass in the left parotid gland, and the CT number of this mass was-99 to-107 HU, as was compatible with lipoma. Under general anesthesia, the patient was operated on. This case showed an effectiveness of the CT scan in the diagnosis of the lipoma.
