Abstract
To determine the feasibility of endoscopic sinus surgery for nasal and paranasal sinus inverted papilloma, we evaluated 25 cases (male : female = 17 : 8) of nasal and paranasal sinus inverted papilloma. Their age ranged from 19 to 70 years, with the mean age of 53.8 years. These cases were operated on at our hospital (Department of otorhinolaryngology, The jikei university school of medicine) between the 6-years period from 1990 to 1995 and followed up for at least 6 months.
Thirteen of 25 cases underwent endoscopic sinus surgery only. In most cases, even if occupied lesion was wide, the origin of inverted papilloma was limited to a small area. As long as the origin of inverted papilloma was able to be treated with an endoscope, we were able to remove it easily.
The present study revealed that Caldwell-Luc operation is required only when endoscopic removal of the origin of inverted papilloma is difficult.
