Abstract
A total of 111 cases of facial bone injuries, excluding nasal bone fractures, were reconstructed during the past five years at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Aoto Hospital, The Jikei University School of Medicine. Of these, 83 were blowout fractures (BOFs), 26 were zygoma and maxilla fractures, one was a frontal bone fracture and one was a mandibular fracture. These fractures were caused by fights, traffic accidents and sports. The chief cause of the BOFs was fights and that of zygoma and maxilla fractures was bicycle accidents. The facial bone fractures were reduced in minimally invasive surgery. The BOFs of the medial orbital wall were reconstructed by the endoscopic endonasal approach.BOFs of the inferior orbital wall were reconstructed by the classic Caldwell-Luc approach and/or endonasal approach. The zygomatico-maxillary fractures were reduced through the lateral aspects of eye incision and through the classic Caldwell-Luc approach, and then fixed using the antral balloon technique.
