Abstract
The management of indoor environments helps not only to reduce the need for medical care but often improves allergic symptoms themselves in subjects with perennial nasal allergies and/or pediatric bronchial asthma. Until recently, airtight houses have been desired, and this trend has led to optimal growing conditions for house dust mites (HDM). However, as a preventive measure against “sick house syndrome”, revised building standards have made ventilation and air conditioning systems (VACS) compulsory since July 2003. Therefore, the effect of these new air conditioning systems on the amount of HDM was investigated. As a result of this investigation, houses equipped with VACS were found to have a relatively low humidity and a lower amount of HDM, compared with houses without VACS.
