We report a case of primary nasopharyngeal tuberculosis.
A 69-year-old woman who had undergone total gastrectomy for gastric cancer (Stage III A) reported a sore throat. A white-coated mass in the nasopharynx was found in pathological examination of the biopsied specimen to have epithelioid cell granulomas around caseous necrosis and multinucleated giant cells. DNA-PCR and bacteriological examinations revealed mycobacterium tuberculosis. Since no tubercular lesions were found elsewhere, she was diagnosed as having primary nasopharyngeal tuberculosis.
The mass in the nasopharynx disappeared after combined chemotherapy with antituberculosis drugs, i.e., INH, RFP, EB, and PZA.
