Abstract
We report a relatively rare case thyroid metastasis of renal cell carcinoma. The patient was a 77-year-old. woman who underwent total extirpation right nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma in 1993, and 9 years after surgery metastases to the lung and pancreas were discovered. Ten years after the surgery she came to our department complaining of the tumor on the right side of her neck. A mass was palpable in the right anterior region of the neck and CT showed a tumor at the upper portion of the right lobe of the thyroid gland. Thyroid metastasis of renal cell carcinoma was suspected based on the clinical and imaging findings. Although metastases were present at other sites, resection of the thyroid tumor was judged necessary for airway maintenance, and subtotal thyroidectomy was performed. Diagnosis of thyroid metastasis of renal cell carcinoma was made based on the macroscopic appearance of the tumor, the histopathological findings and the results of immunostaining. Our department plans follow-up in order to detect local recurrence early.
