Ultrastructural morphology of the promontrial mucosa was studied under EM (JEM 100C) with an accelerating voltage of 60-80kV. Various secretory activities of the epithelium were observed in the present specimens. According to the degree of the secretory activity, 9 specimens which had tall colmnar type of epithelium with numerous goblet cells were designated as hypersecretory state and 4 specimens with cuboidal epithelium with minor secretory cells as hyposecretory state and remaining 5 specimens as normosecretory state. Since characteristic features of epithelial layer of these stages were previously reported, we describe mainly morphological observations on the subepithelial layer. In spite of marked variations of the epithelial lining, very similar inflammatory reactions were found in all specimens. Among many inflammatory cells, plasma cells were most constantly present around the capillaries. Neutrophils, lymphocytes and macrophages were also seen in the mucosa. Most striking finding is the presence of the mast cells. Eleven specimens out of 18 revealed several degranulated mast cells, indicating active release of chemical mediators.
