Hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and oxygen saturation of Hb in the lateral wall of the cochlea were measured by reflectance spectrophotometry in the guinea pig. The spectra were taken from the lateral wall of the basal turn through the light guide. Changes of Hb concentration and oxygen saturation of Hb with hemodilution, terminal asphyxia, 5% CO2 + 95% O2 breathing and epinephrine, phentlamine were measured. The results were: 1) Hb concentration decreased and oxygen saturation of Hb did not change during hemodilution. 2) Hb concentration and oxygen saturation of Hb decreased with terminal asphyxia, increased with 5% CO2 + 95% O2 breathing. 3) Hb concentration and oxygen saturation of Hb did not change in spite of the change of blood pressure with epinephrine and phentlamine.
