Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAE) could be recorded from patients with various ear disorders using a sensitive microphone in the external ear canal. SOAE was recorded in 17% of 140 ears tested. In SOAE detected ears, their hearing in the pure tone audiogram were within 30 dB except 8000 Hz. On the other hand, in cases of severe sensorineural hearing loss (more than 30 dB) and conductive hearing loss, no emissions were found. In the audiograms, they showed a tendency for a higher incidence of SOAE in better hearing ears.
