The endocochlear potentials (EP) and potassium activities of endolymph were measured in the second turn of the cochlea in normal and kanamycin-deafened guinea pigs after perfusing the scala media with Ringer's solution (5mMKCI) or 50mMKCI. Active K+ flux was calculated from the measured K+ flux after perfusion and the passive flux derived from Gk and the driving force for potassium ions. The electrogenic potential transport was plotted as a function of active K+ transport after perfusion in both groups of animals. It was suggested that the EP consists of positive and negative components, but the negative component is very small (=0) in normal physiological condition, which may be K diffusion potential through the organ of Corti produced by anoxia.
