This study was undertaken to investigate the distribution of Na+-activity ([Na+]) in the strial cells of guinea-pig cochlea with relation to the intracellular positive DC potential ([DC+]) of the cells by using a double-barreled Na+-sensitive microelectrode. As the whole, [Na+] in the stria vasclaris was always larger than that of endolymph. In classifying the strial cells, [Na+] in the intermediate cell was slightly larger than that in both the basal cell and the marginal cell (MC), while the magnitude of [DC+] recorded from the strial cells increased one-sidedly toward the scala media. Throughout this experiment, it seemed to be a most important fact that the electro-chemical potential for Na+ in MC was slightly larger than that of endolymph. This datum might be expected to suggest that the passive transport for Na+ in MC is going to cell outside in contrast with the previous consideration which indicates the direction of passive transport for Na+ in this cell.
