As part of our work on medical and pharmaceutical applications using plasma techniques, we developed a novel method of drug delivery system (DDS) preparation on the basis of findings from a series of studies on plasma-induced surface reactions in a variety of polymers. The controlled-release tablets applicable to DDS were prepared by plasma irradiation onto the outer layer of a double-compressed tablet. The drug dissolution pattern and rate can readily be controlled by the selection of polymers used as the outer layer as well as plasma operational conditions. It is hoped that the development of “patient-tailored DDS” for the practical optimization of drug therapy will be gained in the course of our ongoing study.
